SUMMER SCHOOL IN THE NATURAL SCIENCE

THE FOUNDATION COURSE
SAT Amsterdam is organising a 4 week summer school program in the Natural Sciences. This program will guide students to recreate 3 Groundbreaking Experiments, in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, drawn from the Classical Periods of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. We will cover the History just around that time, build parts of the tools and instruments that were required to do the work - such as Telescope, Thermometer, and Scale - and recreate the experiments themselves.

MOTIVATION
K-12 Education today is beyond repair. The accumulation of knowledge and tradition has grown so great, that it is not possible to deliver it all, in one human lifetime, let alone in a school career. Yet K-12 Education insists on doing so, and what is more, retains many relics of limited modern-day use. Furthermore, the very Greatest Achievements of the Scientific Tradition are delivered without any context or motivation, rather like a Table of Contents to a Great Book whose chapters have gone missing. K-12 Education has nothing to say, for example, about the development of the Pythagorean Theorem and its use in the Construction of the Pyramids, about the practical history of the Quadratic. They do not study Galileo's work on Momentum of Speed and are not exposed to the Great Debates that went on about the nature of these concepts. As a result, K-12 Education produces a mere terminological awareness of Science, without any actual Scientists. Of course, some people still become Scientists, but there is a case to be made that they do so, in spite of the effect of K-12 Education.
