## LEARNING DISORDERS

Two categories of learning disorder have been observed. If no obvious biological disorder is found, then best to assume the disorder is educational, until proven otherwise. For example, drugs for ADHD are often prescribed when actually the root cause is the education suffered, rather than the child's biology or neurology.

**MATH PHOBIA**

Given the anecdotal evidence, it would be surprising not to find an epidemic of math phobia in the western world, if a survey could be made.

## DYSCALCULIA (dis-cal-cue-lia)

A long-form Mathematics course, suitable for 9th-12th grade students in an IB Mathematics program (or equivalent). In the course, we introduce mathematical thought by studying the work of the Ancients, such as Euclid, Pythagoras, and Archimedes.

## FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

**What topics will be covered?**

****We will review the biographies of the great thinkers in Mathematics, together with a curated selection of their greatest discoveries, such as Euclid's illustration of the infinitude of prime numbers, Pythagoras' proof of the irrationality of the square root of 2, and Fermat's proof of the impossibility of a finding a 3-dimensional analogue of Pythagoras' Theorem.

**Is the course a suitable complement for the IB Mathematics program?**

- It is an excellent complement to the IB Math curriculum. By re-visiting the original investigations, students learn to see more deeply - not only into the insights that underpin the rules of Arithmetic, Algebra, and Geometry, but also into the methods of proof employed today in any university-level science course.

**Can I join the course mid-year?**

- Not advisable. Students in this course work together to re-create original work, which builds directly on earlier work, so that, in general, it is impossible to catch-up once the train departs.
